Let Me Introduce You to ED & The Gang
There are a few things you should know about me and my recovery journey as you read my blog.
- I’m a big fan of acronyms and abbreviations.
- I like to color code things, especially at work.
- Lists make me happy!
- I’m a visual learner and love word pictures. (Recovery isn’t something you can touch. Word pictures help me see what is occurring in recovery and where I am at in the process.)
One book I would highly recommend for those in recovery is Life Without Ed by Jenni Schaefer. I have taken Jenni’s idea of naming her eating disorder, Ed.
As a result, I have found there are several other voices going on in my head and it’s been helpful to name them so I can do the same with these voices.
Meet the voices in my head….I call them ED & The Gang because they gang up on me. I spend a lot of time trying to name them to better understand what is going on in any particular situation.
No, I do not actually physically hear these voices in my head, but they are lies I have listened to for years and have resulted in a lot of despair and hopelessness.
The goal is to defeat them. But until then, I will separate myself from them, disagree with what they say, and disobey what they want me to do or think.
Do you have any unhealthy voices you have named?
